Best Supporting Actress 1956

And the nominees were....

  • Mildred Dunnock in Baby Doll as Rose Comfort
  • Eileen Heckart in The Bad Seed as Hortense Daigle
  • Dorothy Malone in Written on the Wind as Marylee Hadley (winner)
  • Mercedes McCambridge in Giant as Luz Benedict
  • Patty McCormack in The Bad Seed as Rhoda Penmark

The Field: After covering four years of Best Supporting Actress contenders, I have yet to have two women get the same score in a single year, thus creating very little suspense or hard choices so here's hoping this year gives me harder time. It seems to be a somewhat crazy year with every performance but McCambridge's having some kind of deranged or melodramatic aspect associated with it. This is the first year I've covered with two nominees coming from one film which means I'll have to figure out how exactly I'm going to make that work. All that being said, Heckart will be the first lady I'll be reviewing. I'm excited to get going on Year #5. Anybody have any thoughts on this group of ladies?

I loved The Help. IMO Viola Davis should win the Oscar. I think she can be considered supporting, too without an ugly category fraud. She doesn't have the screentime for a leading win, I feel. Octavia Spencer was great, too but to a lesser extent.

For me Allison Janney was a real standout. She was exceptional (for me). :D I loved Sissy and Jessica, too.

Regarding the guy above me. Elizabeth Olsen for Martha Marcy May Marlene or Kirsten Dunst in Melanchoila are FAR MORE deserving than Viola Davis. Davis should of had the Oscar over Penelope Cruz in 08. But she definitely doesn't deserve it this year. She deserves the nomination, but not the win. Now to this post. Dorothy Malone was so bland to be in her performance. It should have gone to Eileen Eckhart or Patty McCormick. But Eileen takes my number one spot
